Instead of coughing up extra cash for hardwood floors, use acid concrete stain to give your floor the appearance of marble – sleek, chic, and the fraction of the cost of installing fancy flooring.

Step 1: Clean the concrete thoroughly. Get rid of any dirt hiding in the crevices. You’re going to need to get down on your hands and knees, with a trusty old rag in hand.

Step 2: Acid concrete staining is a finicky technique, reacting differently on each surface. Test a small patch of the floor before going through the effort of staining the entire floor and not appreciating the final look. You’re looking for something glossy.

Step 3: Scrub the stain generously into the concrete. You don’t want to leave behind any markings or evidence of your work. Blend the lines together for a seamless finish. Work from the corner of the room out, so you don’t end up stepping in any of the wet patches.

Step 4: Clean the area thoroughly, ensuring the acid residue has been diminished and the surface is neutralized. Failure to complete this step could cause problems with the sealant. You want to create a strong surface for the sealant to latch on.

Step 5: Once it has dried, apply a sealant to prolong the wear of the stain. Give it a few minutes to set – a good time frame is overnight.

This is marvelous for those on a budget and interested in giving a new look to their basement area. It works best on concrete surfaces but can also be applied to various other flooring.
