2 1/2 years into owning this home and the kitchen is 100% done! It’s about time! Moving into this home we thought we were just going to keep the old cabinets and paint them. Well! We then found out that there was no getting rid of that old smell inside of them. Even 3 coats of polly didn’t take care of it. So down they came! And out came the floor. And the counters and half of a wall taken out as well. Ha Ha. They say if you’re going to put money into a room be sure to spend the most on the kitchen and bathrooms. Well, that being said, this is not one of those “get it done under 500.00!” remodels. We did a little splurging. I really don’t have numbers added up but we splurged on some things and saved on others and the kitchen turned out to be just what I hoped and more!! Here is a before and after shot of the kitchen.
There you have it! Look at those nasty green linoleum floors! And don’t even get me started on the minty green counter tops and old appliances. Yuck! This was NOT an easy fix.
Here we are after we pulled everything out! That includes cabinets, plaster, insulation, plumbing and electrical.
After finishing the electrical and insulating we hung the plywood. The plywood made it easier to hang the cabinets and we knew once they were up they weren’t coming down!
Now came the time to hang the cabinets! It was a long process….a week or more actually. When you work full time these projects take extra long! But I was patient.:)
We then added the doors and hardware which I never want to do again in my life and then we hung the paneling back up. Yep! We reused the old paneling. We just painted it a nice creamy yellow and it was as good as new!
Now for the good pictures!
Our yellow light we found in the basement after moving in. It was green and I love yellow so I decided to give it a paint job and put it to good use above our island!
For the shelf below we used an old piece of wood I believe we found in the back yard. Adds a nice touch and a bit of charm to what would just be an empty wall without it.
Some more things we added were the under cabinet lights, recessed lights in the ceiling, lights in the two corner cabinets…
Find out how we built our counter tops for dirt cheap!
